Cascade Swing Orchestra

Inspired by the early music scene among classical musicians, in 2022 Andrew created a 15-piece historically-informed big band in Seattle, dedicated to reviving the music of the swing era with authentic performance practices. This ensemble meticulously interprets period arrangements, infusing each performance with the distinctive style of the era, and occasionally incorporating authentic instruments for a unique experience. The ensemble is composed of local Seattle musicians, who work hard to interpret swing era and early jazz arrangements and bring their joyful swing to a diverse audience. The band's repertoire includes original arrangements, new arrangements, and even new compositions in period style. Check out some of the links below for more info, videos, recordings, and how you can support this project.

Gevaert Translation

In 2025 I published my translation of Gevaert's orchestration treatise. Originally published in 1890, François-Auguste Gevaert’s Course in Orchestration provides a detailed study of the principles and practices of orchestration from the string section alone to the large Wagnerian orchestras of the late romantic period. Unconcerned with issues of individual instrumental technique or construction, Gevaert focuses instead on the orchestra as ensemble, one capable of a wide variety of moods, colors, and textures. To serve this goal the text includes hundreds of illustrative examples taken from the orchestral repertoire, from composers as diverse as Haydn, Palestrina, Wagner, and Weber.
